Golf Course Supervisor (Assistant Superintendent)

Riverside Golf Course

Job Summary:



The City of Portland, Maine seeks a dynamic, experienced leader at Riverside Golf Course for the Department of Parks, Recreation & Facilities. This is a full time, year round, working supervisory position that assists in maintaining the grounds of the City owned golf courses. The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Superintendent on all aspects of turf maintenance and overall conditioning of the golf course. This position requires specific areas of expertise in agronomic practices, playing conditions, and improving daily customer experience. Must be comfortable executing and managing daily tasks ranging from mowing practices, turf repair, chemical/fertilizer applications, irrigation system operation and repair, daily golf course setup, and winter recreation operations. Regularly reviews course playing conditions and works with the Superintendent to determine the best management practices for turf health and playability. Identifies and corrects problems such as drainage and irrigation failures, pest and disease pressure. This position will supervise permanent and seasonal employees and work with private contractors working on City properties as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Maintains appropriate records of work performed, employee time, equipment and material usage, and other pertinent data.
  • Provides daily logs of work.
  • Provides information as requested for weekly, monthly, and annual reports.
  • Provides instruction to individuals and crews on equipment and safety in accordance with state and local regulations.
  • Coordinates and assists with snow removal, ice rink maintenance, and grooming of nordic ski trails at the Riverside Golf Course.
  • Assists as needed with Departmental winter operations including sidewalk snow removal, pinch point clearing, parking lot clearing, and other City-wide winter operations tasks.
  • Oversees crews working winter operations as needed. Performs related work as required.

Required Skills & Experience:


  • Considerable experience in golf course maintenance, and management;
  • graduation from a standard high school;
  • preferred completion of post secondary education in turf maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and ability to conduct golf course maintenance, drainage, automatic irrigation systems and control of fungus, weeds and diagnose and treat turf diseases.
  • Ability to supervise and train personnel.
  • Experience working with a diverse workforce.
  • Some working knowledge of light-duty equipment such as skid-steers, tool cats, backhoes, sidewalk plows.
  • Ability to use a computer and working knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office software, including Excel and Word.

Necessary Special Requirements:


  • Must pass a pre-employment physical assessment.
  • Must have and maintain current certification in First Aid and CPR certifications or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire.
  • Possession of a valid Maine Commercial Pesticide License: Category 3-B; or another state’s equivalent and must transfer to State of Maine License during the 6-month probationary period.
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver's license in good standing.

Salary & Benefits: Supervisors Union – Grade 28 – Weekly Salary Range $1,085.20 - $1,280.40.

Assistant Golf Course Superintendent position available for the 2026 Season at Nonesuch River Golf Club.


The applicant would be joining a strong team with another Assistant Superintendent as well as a Superintendent who has been with the club many years. Our goal is to find an applicant who is interested in growing into the Superintendent role in the next year or two.

Nonesuch River Golf Club is the Greater Portland Area’s premier daily fee golf course. The 203-acre facility features a meticulously maintained 18-hole public championship golf course, a modern 2,500 square-foot clubhouse, a full-size practice range and two putting greens, golf academy, beginner golf lessons, and an experienced, friendly, and professional staff.

The 6,300-yard, par 70 layout was designed by Tom Walker of Golf Design Studios in Palm Beach, Florida. His mission here, as with all his projects, was to provide an appropriate challenge for all players’ skill levels. Consistent with a first-class design, the greens are built to USGA specifications. The course features bent grass fairways and greens, and the layout is fully irrigated.

The course is owned by Dan and Jared Hourihan of Hourihan Golf Management.


A Budget has been created for the Maintenance department which recognizes the need to maintain the course to the level of a premier facility in the state. Each year we also budget for capital improvements including equipment and in-house projects. The Management company has resources to be shared with the other courses, including Nonesuch River Golf Club.

The following are some of the expectations but are not all inclusive.

- Pesticide license or plans to acquire a pesticide license.

- Work with the Superintendent to order supplies and materials according to the budget.

- Work with the Superintendent to monitor and ensure ice buildup does not occur on the greens.

- Take a leadership role on weekend days, the expectation is that the Superintendent and Assistants will rotate weekend coverage.

- Minimum of three years’ experience as assistant.

- Snow removal around the maintenance building and clubhouse.

- Knowledge of irrigation systems and drainage, or interest in learning.

Salary to be based upon experience.

This is a year-round position. Benefits are health Insurance, two weeks’ vacation, any industry association dues and license fees reimbursed.

FREE IMPERMEABLE GREENS COVERS

The Country Club in Brookline, MA has 15-20 Layfield impermeable Greens Covers that they are offering for Free to anyone who is in need and can handle transportation. These are heavy covers and all in good condition. For reference 2 or 3 covers is a heavy load for a pickup truck. The club will help load.
